Born in Mexico City, 1981. Juan L Velazquez holds a BA in Communication Sciences a AA degree in Photography and an MFA in Experimental & Documentary Arts. Because of his family ties, education and work experience he grew up in the liminality of social contexts, in between urban/rural-communities, capital/border-cities, core/periphery-nations.
For over a decade he worked with the moving image through a multifaceted experience within the film community in Mexico. In a later and complementary phase he specialized in synchronous electric-motor stabilization and multi-axial motion control.
As a visual artist Juan L examines and investigates through lens-based images, and installation practices the mechanism of perception, mediation and representation that exist in the tradition of audio visual documentation by exploring the transient human relationship with the natural world.

EXPERIENCE2022Teaching Assistant. DOCST 236S: Color Photography. Duke University. Durham, North Carolina. 2021Teaching Assistant. DOCST 480S: Capstone Seminar in Documentary Studies. Duke University. Durham, North Carolina. 2017Tech Lab for Film Festivals. Mexico City, Mexico.

PHILOSOPHY & METODOLOGY
My motivation as a teacher is to share knowledge, with the understanding that learning is a two-way process: from/of both students and instructor. Knowledge comes not only from text and theory, this being what strengthens it, but what nurtures and expands it is the experience that is gained thorough risk, experimentation and even failure. In the lens-based visual arts, it is essential to find a balance between the comprehension of technique, from using technology as a tool, and the personal search of a creative voice, congruent with each individuals concerns and interests. Information must be a motivator and a trigger to stimulate ideas that through application will reinforce and direct an ever-evolving artistic practice in my students.

My approach to teaching is based on accountability, for each student to work in a methodological manner. To achieve this, context and third-person experience is taught with the intention of building the fundamentals of a technical background and to generate critical and productive decision-making. By laying the constitutive bases of lens-based artwork in both still and moving images I aim to guide my students through scenarios that are presented in the professional environment of the audiovisual practice. When each student is able to personalizes their goals I can involve them in the improvement of their skills. By selecting their priorities, on a project oriented course, students can additionally optimize the management of their time to be able to dedicate less to the tedious stages of conclusion and more to the exploration of ideas through the execution and experimentation with multiple means of audiovisual expression.

Photographic imprints registered as material markers of memory serve as an entry point into the juxtaposition of space and the displacement of time to explore a becoming, of the unknown land into a place of belonging. Personal geographies live in the recondite multiplicity of space-time, they cohabit our embodied experiences. Several recordings of these human experiences are presented in this multimedia exhibition through presence, directionality, recurrence and mediation.

Theatrical WindowPolypropylene Mesh, One Way Mirror Film, Extruded Acrylic,
Light Stands, 2K Video Projection, Central Subwoofer Audio

Theatrical Window is a single-channel, site-specific, installation with multiple reflected frames, where one-way mirror acrylic panels are used to scatter light around a rectangular room, to conform a womb of persistent visions. When observing the window panel with some attention, what could be perceived as a live occurrence in the ongoing present shifts into an unwitnessed past, of the currently inhabited space, by projecting a non synchronic recorded time. Sound pressure from isolated tones of low frequencies are used to intensify the spatial perception within the chamber.

Spectral Ways
Large Format Pigment Inkjet Prints, Acrylic Tables RGBW LED light, Color Xerography Prints

Spectral Ways is a multi-room installation where we interact through light with signifiers to discover unseen sightings. One room is illuminated with natural light to evidence possible views, while the other one is illuminated artificially by an intermittent hue to conceal knowledge under the visible spectrum . A “light room”, containing multiple mosaics of infrared images scattered in tables, reveals the purpose of repetiton. A “dark room” displaying copies of a reseach journal on infrared imaging, disguises the reliance on annotations.
